Lions, tigers, bears and the errant baby gorilla — you'll find them all at the San Francisco Zoo (get directions).
Situated on the far western side of the city in the laid back surfer's paradise of SF's Outer Sunset neighborhood, the zoo feels world's away from the hustle and bustle of Union Square.
It's an appropriate backdrop for the over 250 species of exotic creatures you'll encounter there, from Hasani the baby gorilla (the zoo's pride and joy) to the colony of Magellanic penguins on Penguin Island.
Weekends are always hopping with plenty of family fun, including a series of educational sessions for toddlers sponsored by Fisher Price. The final few weeks of the year marks the "Winter Goes Wild" event, during which you can watch the furry and feathered residents of the San Francisco Zoo open their holiday gifts (snowmen, ice towers, and "zoocicles," among other animal-friendly toys and treats).
If you prefer your critter encounters with a side of exercise, consider the Zoo's BikeAbouts, a 90 minute bicycle tour through the zoo.
Check out the zoo's calendar for details on all events.San Francisco offers a wealth of recreational activities — more than anyone has time to pursue.
